SIP2 for 3M smart chute
SCLS uses ITG for self check and RFID. Some of our libraries are planning on implementing automated materials handling (sorters). We are trying to figure out it we need further development in order for Koha to work with a sorter. I've identified the following bug which addresses issues with the 3M smart chute : http://bugs.koha-community.org/bugzilla3/show_bug.cgi?id=3435 This was an enhancement submitted by NEKLS. I'm looking for information from NEKLS and anyone as to whether or not the SIP2 necessary for AMH is or will be in Koha. I have found the following which does show what is there now: http://koha.org/documentation/manual/3.0/appendices/sip2-integration I know that not all SIP packets necessary for AMH are listed there. Vicky, Did you talk to ITG about this? Sent from my iPhone On May 21, 2010, at 10:11 AM, "vtl@scls.lib.wi.us" <vtl@scls.lib.wi.us> wrote:

NEKLS does not have sorters, only automated check in chutes and self-check machines. I"m guessing you will need further development work in order to make them work. I might suggest, however, that you put your money towards porting all of the existing SIP functionality to NCIP, instead of fixing up SIP, if your equipment supports it. Addendum: I just found out that 3M has announced plans for SIP3. It may be a philosophical debate worth having to decide which direction we want to take Koha re: the interchange protocol(s) it supports. (That said, NEKLS would probably put some money towards NCIP development. That part isn't strictly up to me though, so don't take that as gospel.) There's also an NCIP2 in the works. Unless SIP3 changes the game plan, SIP2 and NCIP2 should both be supported in Koha since they serve slighly different functions. Lori Ayre 2010/5/21 Liz Rea <lrea@nekls.org>

Thanks Liz and Lori. This confirms what I suspected--we will need development work done. I've wondered about NCIP. The problem is that we are on a tight deadline for go live and since the SIP2 protocol is necessary for self check is in place, I would be hesitant to start over with NCIP, unless they could mix and match? But it does seem a shame to put more development dollars into SIP2 if we should really be moving toward NCIP. 2010/5/21 Lori Bowen Ayre <lori.ayre@galecia.com>

I don't think you will get everything you need from NCIP (but maybe NCIP2??) so it doubt it would be a wasted effort. Lori On Fri, May 21, 2010 at 1:50 PM, vtl@scls.lib.wi.us <vtl@scls.lib.wi.us>wrote:

If you want sip functionality go for sip. Ncip is a different beast (and has more of an existence as a proposed standard than usable implementations a situation that has persisted for years). Colin
The SIP2 extensions sponsored by NEKLS should be largely sufficient for AMH systems. If they are lacking, we are certainly a lot closer to a complete SIP implementation than a NCIP one. It's the difference between tweaking and coding from scratch; hours vs. months.
