Besides the Debian documentation (starting at http://www.debian.org/support), I usually recommend a great Debian tutorial I found at http://www.aboutdebian.com/. Down the left-hand side are a bunch of task-based how-tos that you might find useful, and the "Good Books" link on the right navbar holds a list of excellent books, most of which are on my shelf, these days.
