Koha Bulk Addition of Items
I'm a librarian for a school which manages all student texts. Needless to say I have a large number of each textbook, somewhere around 150 to 200 for each. We had previously stored these in a Non-marc based access database. If you use MARC Edit, or some other utility, and add multiple 952 tags to each record, that should add an equivalent number of additional items. I believe the minimum requirements include the $a, $b, and $y subfields, but you can obviously add barcodes ($p), location ($c), or whatever. Will adding 952s to MARC within Koha's internal editor after the records are staged in the reservoir or in the main collection also add holding Items or does it require the Import script to update the holdings? Cab Vinton wrote:

One thing to note: binary MARC (ISO-2709) has a size limit (around 64k, I've heard) that is likely not enough for your many items; best to use MARCXML for this kind of import, as it is unrestricted for size. Hi all, I have just looked as some data I loaded that has up to 300 items per bib and that has a maximum size of 36000 characters in the MARC leader. I would say 200 items would not break the size limit per MARC record as long as item notes are not "essays". There was another posting recently from someone trying to update item records using the MARC loader which concluded that as long as you can find a match point - usually ISBN (and specify it in the loading screens) then any items in 952 tags will be added to the same bib record. Note they will each need their own unique barcodes. I would stick with preparing your data using MarcEdit which may be able to take your data straight from spreadsheet or comma-separated, and match on ISBN using the Koha MARC import. Good luck. If you want to add additional items to existing records in the catalog, using bib numbers (999$c) for a match point will ensure that the items are added to the correct record. We've done this & not had any nasty surprises. Note that some older titles may be missing ISBN's, and there are other potential issues that I'm not sure how Koha handles with matches: 020$z (cancelled ISBN's), multiple ISBN's for one record, same ISBN for different records, etc. Cab Vinton, Director Sanbornton Public Library Sanbornton, NH
