Some questions on importing authorities
Having found recent copies of the greek standard terms (they're in http://www.nlg.gr/www/el/node/56 ), I'm looking into the matter of importing them into koha (v3.08.16). I understand that this is something done from the command line only, I have some questions though on the process: a) Is it critical to use some specific operating system user, as in the case of Zebra rebuilds? b) Are ISO2709 authorities files MARC-flavour agnostic in general? Can the same file be used in MARC21 and UNIMARC? c) Are ISO2709 authorities files encoding agnostic in general? Need one specify the encoding used during import? d) If the import is performed twice (either using the same file, or using successive versions from the same source, as in the case of NLG), will we end-up having multiple identical entries? e) Are there any specific system preferences that one should check/modify prior to import? For the curious/adventurous, here are two automatic translations of the page mentioned above: http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=el&sl=el&tl=en&prev=_dd&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nlg.gr%2Fwww%2Fel%2Fnode%2F56 http://www.microsofttranslator.com/bv.aspx?from=el&to=en&a=http://www.nlg.gr/www/el/node/56 The files to use are: http://www.nlg.gr/www/sites/default/files/NLG_auth_01_13_0.zip (apparently the initial 2013 version) http://www.nlg.gr/www/sites/default/files/NLG_auth_02_13.rar (apparently the latest version). Kind Regards, Manos Petridis
Hi Manos: I can't tell you about agnostic encoding (we are using UTF8), but authorities works with: http://www.loc.gov/marc/authority/ You can import auth records from staff interface, but you should change to authorities instead of bibs. Thank you Ramiro, I wasn't aware of the possibility to use the staff interface! I suppose it is done through "Home › Tools › Stage MARC records for import", or I should say I hope its is done so, because I tried reading the data file mentioned: the upload woked fine (100% uploaded in a few seconds). I then proceded to "Stage for import", that remained at 0% for quite a while, then ended sucessfully. MARC staging results :
293141 records in file 0 records not staged because of MARC error 293141 records staged Did not check for matches with existing records in catalog 0 item records found and staged From "Home › Tools › Manage staged MARC records" I can see that the records themselves seem to be properly formed and in Greek, so this covers my questions on both syntax and encoding.
I haven't encountered yet where is one to specify that they're authority records and not biblio ones. I expect that it occurs when one tries to import the staged records, in "Home › Tools › Manage staged MARC records › Batch XYZ" however no such option exists. I can select a framework to use/apply to the items I import, but no mention of authorities. Could it be that I need to be at a relase later/greater than v3.08.16? Best regards, Manos Petridis

Ooops, you are right, it seems the option is there from 3.10 + Maybe it's a good time for upgrading. Regards, Ramiro 2013/8/5 Manos PETRIDIS <egpetridis@yahoo.com>
