Hi all, I have filled out the survey and have some thoughts. #1 - I was asked to put 'form a foundation now' on the list of options - but I thought we had decided on the chat that this was too time consuming a process at this time and that we just wanted to find a custodian for the time being while we go through the steps of forming a foundation? #2 - Also, I copied the original list that we all gave MJ to create his poll as priorities for the foundation we form - my question is - do we want to focus on what we want the custodian org to do and then come up with another survey later when we're ready to form a group ourselves with questions of what it should do? #3 - What is an opensearch portal for Koha? :) Okay - let the discussion begin. Hi all,

That was my recollection also, but I guess there are a lot of people who weren't present. I figure between this initial vote and the final vote there will need to be some discussion.
#2 - Also, I copied the original list that we all gave MJ to create his poll as priorities for the foundation we form - my question is - do we want to focus on what we want the custodian org to do and then come up with another survey later when we're ready to form a group ourselves with questions of what it should do?
That would be my preference.
#3 - What is an opensearch portal for Koha? :)
No Idea :) Chris

This was my understanding from the meeting also.

They should be addressed in separate surveys/votes.
#3 - What is an opensearch portal for Koha? :)
YGIAGAM (Your guess is as good as mine) ;-) Kind Regards, Chris

So this would be a two step process? Find someone to be a custodian now, and then form a foundation to take over custodial work? Even if you need a high level of responsiveness *now*, this might be a more difficult path than to just skipping to "create a foundation." And then there's the question of transferring rights and property a second time. Alternatively, I suppose the custodian organization could serve as the final destination. There's some good names on the list.
#3 - What is an opensearch portal for Koha? :)
(blink) I thought you knew. :-) Whatever it is, I'm all for it. :-D Thanks, -- Ben
I think the problem with creating a foundation now is the amount of time it takes and choosing a country and all that jazz. Whereas if we sign up with a custodian now and make it clear that this is just temporary it gets us started and we can focus on forming our own foundation over time. Also forming our own foundation costs money - so that means we have to wait until we have that ... On Mon, Sep 21, 2009 at 4:35 PM, Ben Ide <benide@gmail.com> wrote:

It was on MJ's original poll - I assume someone asked him to add it - or that he knows what it is :)

Also, we may make mistakes (says this ex-officer of an association that failed through a mix of imperfect rules drafted by experts and a lack of officer candidates IMO). Starting a new foundation is not a quick fix and after 3+ years of waiting for various people working on it and no idea what they've produced, I'm very strongly in favour of joining an open association.

The poll is linked from http://wiki.koha.org/doku.php?id=kohafoundation and you can find the phrase in "desires" in the quote from http://www.nabble.com/Re%3A-Koha-Foundation-p3453288.html by Paul Poulain. Indeed...
From http://www.opensearch.org/Documentation/Frequently_asked_questions
"What is OpenSearch? "OpenSearch is a collection of simple formats for the sharing of search results. "You can use OpenSearch formats to help people discover and use your search engine and to syndicate search results across the web." [...] "OpenSearch was created by A9.com, an Amazon.com company, and the OpenSearch format is now in use by hundreds of search engines and search applications around the Internet. "The OpenSearch specification is made available according to the terms of a Creative Commons license so that everyone can participate." Okay, I'm still for it. :-) Thanks, -- Ben

Its the time issue also, getting something set up and 'right' will take a lot of time. That was the main idea by using something in the mean time. Setting up an independent foundation is something that will take a signficant amount of time and resources to get right.
And then there's the question of transferring rights and property a second time.
Yep, thats why they are listed as pros or cons on the wiki (how easy it would be to transfer).
Alternatively, I suppose the custodian organization could serve as the final destination. There's some good names on the list.
That is also a possibility. Chris
This has started on one of our servers, no matter what it defaults to 21 days. If i create rules to have a certain item type only be allowed 3 days loan, its still 21 days. We recently moved our server where one is running apache and the other is running the database and for some reason this instance is not working correctly. Anyone have suggestions? I am thinking of just doing a update with the latest to see if it fixes it. I am not sure how its coded in the system but I am assuming that the 21 is hard coded in the script and it just checks to see if there is any fine/loan entries in the database and to use them if they are there. Thanks. -Scott
Scott, could the apache/mysql configuration be incorrect and you are still working off the old database? Or the problem could be in the way you have setup the rules. The more specific rules override the more general rules. Thanks, Savitra Sirohi Nucsoft OSS Labs http://www.osslabs.biz On Tue, Sep 22, 2009 at 2:19 AM, scott <scott@sedc.k12.ut.us> wrote:
