Re: [Koha] Use koha as a reference database
Hi, Colleen-- I'm sorry that you've found cataloging non-physical items in MARC frustrating--I catalog a lot of non-physical resources in MARC (and have for a long time, both with AACR2R & RDA), so please let me know if I could answer any questions you might have. Heather, I can often be found banging my head against the wall while cataloging these citations. I haven't had much luck finding examples of conference papers and book chapters cataloged in MARC. I do indeed have some questions that I will email you off list. Thank you for responding :) Colleen Conner Corporate Library, Esri -- View this message in context: http://koha.1045719.n5.nabble.com/Use-koha-as-a-reference-database-tp5846798... I look forward to it, Colleen--I'm always happy to chat about cataloging! If I come up with record examples in our catalog that I think others might find useful, I'll be sure to send those to the Koha list as well, and perhaps to Nicole to include in the manual. Hi Colleen, We use Koha to maintain our small library collection, as well, compiling journal citation index (cataloguing conference papers, book chapters, etc. shouldn't be much different). Please see: http://opac.translib.com/cgi-bin/koha/opac-detail.pl?biblionumber=11710&query_desc=ti%2Cwrdl%3A%20journal%20citation as an example. We use MARC21 and utilised MARC 773 (host item entry) to create the link: subfield $t (title of the source), subfield $x (ISSN of the source, if required) and subfield $g (related parts, such Vol., No., and pagination information). I hope this helps. The issue I have with using 773 for analytic records is combining all the source info into one field does not allow for proper export into bibliographic software such as EndNote, Zotero, or Refworks. This is a record for an article I exported in RIS (this is from Heather's library as ours maps RIS tags differently): TY - BOOK AU - Bates, Robert S. TI - The marine licensing tradition: what are those ships? PY - 1998/// CY - Harrisburg, PA PB - Cowles Enthusiast Media KW - Merchant mariners KW - Licenses KW - Engraving KW - Illustrations ER - The article is now a book and there is no source info for the journal (773 t & g: Nautical world Vol. 1, no. 5 (June 1998), p. 38-43). The export plugin from ByWater that we have corrects most of this in our bibliography but we had to separate 773g to 363abc so that I could map the RIS tags to fields with the data parsed correctly. What I found when I first started this project was that others are using Koha as a bibliography with analtyic records but I never found anyone using the Koha export to RIS or BIBTEX who could relate to my issues. Hi-- How are you exporting into Zotero, Colleen? I went to the record you mentioned in your email: http://keys.bywatersolutions.com/cgi-bin/koha/opac-detail.pl?biblionumber=2 And when I saved it to my Zotero, I clicked that little Zotero page icon in my Firefox toolbar & chose the option, "Save to Zotero using 'Library Catalog (Koha)'" and the data from the 773 seemed to export correctly--that is, my Zotero listing has this: Item Type: Journal Article Title: The marine licensing tradition: what are those ships? Author: Bates, Robert S. Publication: Nautical world Issue: 5 Pages: 38-43 Date: June 1998 (Etc.) There is a glitch in that it didn't pick up the volume number (vol. 1), so I'm going to try to find out why that didn't happen, but otherwise it seems to look good to me. (Sorry, I don't have any experience with EndNote or RefWorks.) Heather, I have the FF Zotero plugin and you are correct, for the most part it works correctly. It grabs the data from what is visible on the record detail page instead of using MARC fields to tags. I am more concerned with using the "Save Record" options in Koha. If you save the record using RIS and then open that in Zotero Standalone (Desktop software) you will get the record as tagged in my last message. EndNote and the others read the export tags the same way. Our users utilize a number of different softwares so I am hoping to get the RIS and BIBTEX tagging to be accurate. If they only used Zotero on FF, I'd be set! Colleen Conner Corporate Library, Esri -- View this message in context: http://koha.1045719.n5.nabble.com/Use-koha-as-a-reference-database-tp5846798... Hi to all, if you want to improve RIS export you need to work on C4/Ris.pm. If you want to improve BIBTEX export you need to work on routine marc2bibtex inside C4/Record.pm. The best option is transform the conversion from perl-code conversion in a XSLT conversion. But you need to start from scratch, I don't find any xslt stilesheet about MARC21 -> RIS or MARC21 -> BIBTEX Bye Zeno Tajoli
Hi-- Oh--I understand now! Thank you for clarifying, Colleen. I wish I could help or offer suggestions on Koha's record save functions in those formats, but neither we nor the researchers really use them on Koha. When we or our users need a particular bibliographic citation format for export that's not via the Zotero plug-in on Firefox or Chrome, it's usually one that they can get from the version of our record on WorldCat.org, where the user can export in many different citation formats, but I know that putting analytic records into WorldCat.org/OCLC isn't something every institution can do. I hope there's a way to get this working!
