Hello, I'm new to this discussion list and thought I should introduce myself. My name is Shirley Lew and I'm teaching a course, Library Automation & Systems, at the School of Library, Archival & Information Studies (SLAIS) program at UBC this term - course web site is here http://blogs.ubc.ca/libr551/blog/. The course is using an instance of Koha for Class and we also have access to Evergreen for learning/teaching purposes. For the majority of students, this is the first opportunity for hands-on exploration of an open source ILS and they're looking forward to it! The major course assignment this term involves evaluating and comparing some of the functionality between Koha and Evergreen. I will be encouraging students to subscribe to this listserv, both to observe the discussion and to ask questions as they get to know the system. The Koha community is clearly a very supportive and collegial one, so I thank everyone in advance for any help/support you can offer students who may ask questions. Shirley
Shirley, I can't tell you how excited this makes me! As a library student we never saw a real library system!! That's just insane in my opinion and I love that you're showing at least 2 to your students. You may also want to have your students pop into an IRC meeting and lurk to see how we share information and make decisions as a community. And Shirley, If you have your students compare functionality of the two systems (at a point in time), I'd love to see the results of their work. This sort of thing is just what we need at rscel.org and opensource.califa.org...two sites I'm using on open source library system projects. I'm sure I'm not the only one interested! I'd second Nicole's suggestion and also suggest that the students just pop onto irc.katipo.co.nz:6667 #koha (the koha irc channel) anytime to have a chat. There are usually a mix of users and developers on pretty much continuously. Chris

I use irssi, so for any students familair with the commandline that is a good one. For a gui one, a lot of people seem to like chatzilla. If you dont want a client at all http://mibbit.com can be used in a webbrowser. Chris
To use Mibbit (http://mibbit.com): In the first "box" (the box that starts with a label called "IRC:" and a IRC networks dropdown list), click on the "Server" link that is at the right of that dropdown list. Then, in the "Server address" textbox that appears, write: irc.katipo.co.nz In the "Nick" textbox write your desired nickname and in the "Channel" textbox write #koha (Ricardo Dias Marques wrote these instructions.)
