As the Computer Support Person, I've been asked to add RDA support to our Koha database, but after considerable reading, it is my understanding that the Library of Congress has decided that this is not the way to proceed. Can anyone clarify whether adding RDA support is necessary and required for the Koha Framework to support upcoming MARC records? Thanks, Phillip@livingstonpubliclibrary.org
Phillip- My understanding about RDA from the LOC is that RDA records should be separate from other AACR2 records since they are cataloged differently. What I generally see is libraries will set up an RDA framework with the appropriate RDA fields and use that framework to catalog in an RDA manner. However, you can certainly add RDA tags to existing frameworks and then catalog in a hybrid RDA/AACR2 method. I think it depends on how your cataloger feels about it. :-) -Joy Nelson Director of Migrations ByWater Solutions ________________________________ From: "phillip@livingstonpubliclibrary.org" <phillip@livingstonpubliclibrary.org> To: koha@lists.katipo.co.nz Sent: Monday, June 10, 2013 3:06 PM Subject: [Koha] Marc Fields 336, 337, 338 (RDA) As the Computer Support Person, I've been asked to add RDA support to our Koha database, but after considerable reading, it is my understanding that the Library of Congress has decided that this is not the way to proceed. Speaking as a cataloguer. . . The Library of Congress, British Library and Oxford University (and also New Zealand and Australian National libraries) are creating new records in RDA. If you're relying on Z39.50 downloads from a library who uses RDA to add records to your catalogue, you will probably want to retain the information in these records that is coded in fields that are not present in the default framework. Some info here: http://wiki.koha-community.org/wiki/RDA There is an RDA framework for Koha here http://wiki.koha-community.org/wiki/MARC_frameworks I found I needed to edit it a bit (add in some fields we use that weren't there) for our needs, so you'll probably want your cataloguer's input on this. The uptake on RDA seems varied, I know of one large university library where the policy is to let their cataloguers continue with AACR2 for as long as they wish (i.e. retirement in some cases!). I think most libraries will have a mix of both types of records in their catalogues for some time. Possibly always? After all, how many records do you find in the Library of Congress' database that say "Old catalog"? -Elaine On Tue, Jun 11, 2013 at 11:54 PM, Joy Nelson <joy.nelson1@yahoo.com> wrote:

"Always" for our catalog! We have records cataloged according to AACR2R, AACR2, AACR, ALA 1949 Rules, other rules, and although I blush to say it, it's true--briefly "cataloged" according to no known rules (they *are* scheduled for future cataloging projects). As long as the fields that RDA records need are in our frameworks, the records should coexist happily. I expect my copy cataloging will be AACR2R for some time, since most of the items we get are older, while all the original cataloging will be RDA (as of Monday--fun!).
