Hi All, I'm new to the Koha community, so first a brief introduction: I'm the IT administrator at the International English Library in Düsseldorf, Germany. We migrated to Koha a couple of weeks ago and we're quite happy with all the improvements over our previous ILS. There is one thing we're having trouble figuring out: cataloging the publisher name and location as an authority value. We've tried using the Corporate Name authority, but it didn't work because the subfields don't match between MARC fields 260 and 110. I also found the "Create new authority type" page on the wiki, but I'd prefer not to maintain a patch set I would need to apply after each Koha upgrade, so that method isn't really optimal. It seems like this would be a fairly common use case, so I wonder if I'm just missing something basic. How do most libraries catalog publisher information? Thanks in advance for any help you can offer. Adam
Hi, Adam-- If we do want an authority controlled added entry for publisher, we put it in a 710 field. Since the 260 (or 264) field is transcribed from the item, it has to match what is in the item, which may not match the authoritative form of the publisher's name. (We use MARC21, by the way.) Our authority records for publishers are normal corporate body authority records (i.e., 110s.) We have never traced publisher's locations, but, again, the information in the 260 (or 264) is transcribed from the item. I have heard of special collections that create an authority controlled added entry for place, and the ones I've seen are based on geographic authority records (151s) and traced in 751 fields. I have no personal experience with doing this in Koha, though! I hope this is helpful! The 260 and/or the new 264 (which is used in records following RDA (as well as other records where the 260 has been properly converted to 264) are transcribed fields, so the data in 260$a/$b, and 264 $a/$b should appear in the form found on the item being cataloged. If you would like to control the publisher's name in an authorized form, you would place that authorized form in a 710 field (if the publisher is a corporate entity; if the publisher is a person, then you'd use the authorized form of the person's name in 700). Place of publication would generally not be controlled, but the 751 does appear to be available for that purpose [1] [1] http://www.loc.gov/marc/bibliographic/bd751.html I hope this helps, Bryan Baldus Senior Cataloger Quality Books Inc. Thank you, Heather and Bryan. That was exactly the information I needed. Adam
