Odd coincidence, I just spent a day in a workshop soldering (making a crystal radio, cutting edge technology from the middle of the last century). There were 50 people (from teenagers to 70 somethings) with soldering irons happily working away. No burns or other injuries, and we also did not set off the smoke alarms. One thing you will need to consider is the wiring for the space. Make sure it can handle the requirements of any equipment that will be in use.
