Robin et al., Apologies for the delay. I started over with a clean install and everything proceeded smoothly. I have no idea what the issue was, but I wasn't able to reproduce it and now I've got a nice shiny package installation with everything running green. Sorry for all the trouble over these weeks and I really appreciate everyone's help.
