It could go both ways, and is really a local decision. We tend to catalogue a lot of our multi-volume sets individually. This is an historical artefact; some of our 19th century sets of songsters, etc. are incomplete and or we have more than one edition of some volumes. However, for a recently published (and complete) set of encyclopedias, I would think the simplest option would be to catalogue the set in one biblio. The ISBN field (020 in MARC21) is repeatable. I am cataloging a 10-volume set of encyclopedias. Each as its own ISBN number but the set will be cataloged as one main entry. Therefore, my question is, do I add a discrete biblio record for each volume?
