We're testing checkin/checkout sounds right now on our Koha system and should have it in production within the next week.
Is this something you've developed in house? There is a bug in Bugzilla tracking this issue, and has some proposed patches included: http://bugs.koha.org/cgi-bin/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=1080 I haven't had time to test it myself, so I'm curious if your solution is based on it.
