Are this values arbitrary? Would it be correct to encode an additional value in the plugin template for a specific library? or should I stick with using 040 for that purpose?
I think it depends on whether or not you share your records. If you stick with using the 040 for a specific library's cataloging symbol/name, then the 008 position 39 can be correctly encoded for the source of the record. (For example, records I create on OCLC are coded "d.") If you use the approved values, and you share your records, or ever will share your records, they will validate in the other system(s). Hope this helps!
