I fully support the creation of a structure that will be able to receive, manage, and allocate funds in a transparent and impartial manner -- and that is accountable to the community and professionally audited. This would require a governing structure to set priorities and allocate funds and an independent non-profit to receive funds and manage these. It makes sense to me that the Horowhenua Library Trust, as the original non-profit institution that launched Koha in 1999, be the first institution to serve in this function. It is essential that Koha continues to grow and to improve. I would see such a development as a necessary step to ensure long term viability. All libraries that use Koha have an interest in and responsibility to contribute to its ongoing development and stability--such a development would provide the structure for a concerted effort. After discussing with many of you within the Koha project for many years and countless times, I'd like to bring forth the idea of having a fund-raising organization for Koha.
+1.
Right now I don't even know *how* to make a financial contribution to some phase of the project.
Let me add the suggestion that whatever system is adopted include provisions for targeted donations.
For example, as we're a research library, my Board might be willing to contribute toward infrastructure or indexing, but not circulation or e-book projects. If the only way to donate is to a general fund, the uses of which are controlled internally (no matter how well), it could discourage some donations.
