It depends on what you mean by 'material type'. The leader and 006/007/008 control the small material type icon. The 942$c controls the item type icon that displays on search results. The 952$y displays the icon in the item record. If you want to follow RDA and fill in the 33x fields, go to the framework that you want to edit and add these fields.
