[Koha] Is SQL in reports limited to a SELECT statement?

Hi, I'm working on creating a report to parse data from biblioitems.marcxml. My SELECT statement is long and repetitive and could benefit from the use of variables. Do all reports created from SQL have to have only one statement, a SELECT statement? Thanks in advance for any tips, tricks, or kludges, or for confirming what I suspect is the awful truth.
