If you're using ElasticSearch, you could change the Elasticsearch mappings to use 264$c for date-of-publication (instead of the default 008_/7-10). Though I haven't tested that yet, but we've just had a meeting where we decided to try it this way... :-)
Not really an answer to your question, but if you're only asking the question to get the data searchable, it should be still usable.
