are you using Zebra?
If you don't want Zebra to interpret and, or and not as boolean operators, you can use quotes around your query: "Philosophy and education George Knight"

which version of Koha are you using?
I also checked translations for some versions, but couldn't see anything that would explain the extra ().
Could you check if they are maybe added in the authorised value? Go to: administration > authorised values > NOT_LOAN and check the descriptions entered there.
