Basically the highlighting code is pretty simple and just searches through the results looking for strings that match what you have as search terms. It's not actually a reflection on what was actually searched, just a visual cue for people looking at the results. If you have a concrete idea for how it might be improved (keeping in mind that things like 'and' aren't always a boolean term), feel free to file a bug.
