First, I would like to remove the ‘Search for this title in:’ section.   I tried editing the opac-details.tmpl template, but that didn’t work.

It should have. Editing the template is an option if you're willing to track those edits through subsequent upgrades. A better solution would be to use JavaScript or CSS to hide the section without editing the template.
