I have checked gdbm in apt-cache:
user@user-desktop:~# dpkg -l | grep gdbm ii libgdbm3 1.8.3-3 GNU dbm database routines (runtime version)
You need to install http://packages.ubuntu.com/libgdbm-dev Similar things apply for any -lxxxx error. But why not install the libxml-libxml-perl package? (I think that's OK for versions - if not, backport the package from unstable... still better than cpan-splat.)
