Hi, Charles-- I think there have been misunderstandings--Koha can track multiple frequencies in the serial collection area--historical frequencies are seen in the "Serial Collection" area, looking at actual issues checked in, late, etc. In the Subscription Record, the current frequency is recorded so that projecting the not-yet-received issues, their numbering, etc., is accurate--the current frequency is recorded here for the issues that, yes, have been paid for and are expected. The historic and current frequencies are also accurately tracked in the bibliographic record, in the 310 & 321 fields of the bibliographic record, especially if you make your bibliographic records available to others via Z39.50 and/or bibliographic utilities such as OCLC. This is the way that Koha (and many other ILS's) handle serials of varying frequencies. Koha's Subscription Records and Serials Collections can also handle serials of no regularity whatsoever. In my opinion, this is most easily understood via creating a bib record & then Subscription Record, and checking in issues to create a Serial Collection (and then item records) in a demo installation of Koha. Hello, Carlos! Thanks for your comments. I think we will have to agree to disagree about the purpose of the serials modules. My library and other libraries I have worked in use the serials module to check in serial issues to help us track which issues have arrived, which issues are due, and contacting the vendor and publisher when issues are late enough to earn our concern. After all, the libraries have paid good money for the subscriptions; and out patrons expect them to arrive in a more-or-less timely fashion. My question was whether Koha can handle multiple frequencies of serials, e.g., Starlog that had several publishing frequencies over the course of its run. I also know of a few academic journals whose frequencies changed over the course of their runs for various reasons. If you don't know the answer, that's fine. I'll experiment on a clone of our machine and report back to the Koha community through this forum. Thanks again. ありがとうございます。 In our latest exchange, 10 Feb. 2022 at 0745 [JST], I received this from you: First of all, I don't really have much to do with the serials module, so if
someone with better knowledge is available then please ignore this.
My understanding is that the recording of frequencies in the bibliographic record is intended for OPAC use, (so users can have some idea as to how regular a serial frequency is), but the frequency in the serials module is to help staff with predicting when a subscribed serial issue is due to arrive (prediction patterns and all that). One does not necessarily have anything to do with the other. In the serials module you'd need to change the subscription frequency when it changed, but not keep historical frequencies.
I hope this helps.
With kind regards from the Dalton McCaughey Library Team

Hi, all!
My library is beginning to implement the serials module, but we have a question. How does Koha handle serials with variable frequencies? Case in point: Starlog.
According to WorldCat and the Library of Congress, Starlog had three frequencies during its run. To copy the 310 and 321 fields,
310 ␣␣ ‡a Monthly, ‡b <Jan. 1982-> 321 ␣␣ ‡a Quarterly, ‡b Aug. 1976- 321 ␣␣ ‡a 8 times a year, ‡b <Dec. 1978->
How are the three frequencies entered into Koha?
Thanks for your help, everyone!
P. S. Sorry for the extra spacing and the "␣". I now use "␣" for the space in indicators in order to be absolutely clear an indicator is blank.
