How about this:

Create patron categories year1, year2, year3, etc.

At the end of the year:
   Rename year3 to [something else]
   Rename year2 to year3
   Rename year1 to year3

I just tried renaming a patron category, and it looks like I can change the category to another name and it affects all patrons in that category. A couple of problems come to mind: what would you do with the year3 patrons at the end of the year? Second, you'd have to change a lot of individual patron records if they don't go to the next year. (We use the term "PGY" to designate year; interns are PGY-1. A lot of residents change hospitals after their intern year.)

Or is it possible to bulk-rename a list of patrons from one patron category to another? That would avoid dealing with either deleting the entire patron group of year3 or finding something unique to rename it each year.

And if this sounds every bit as good an idea as changing the flavor of Coke, just hit the delete key and let me crawl under my desk to hide.

There are no "subcategories" in Koha. However, you can use the Bsort1 or
Bsort2 authorized values categories. Those are linked to the Sort 1 and Sort 2 fields in the patron file.

Alternatively, you can use extended patron attributes to indicate the year.
