Item Types are defined on the Administration page of the staff client.
You can define your item types in whatever form you wish. If you wish
you can use different descriptions at the record level (942$c) and the
holdings level (items.itype or 952$y). Which is used in the circulation
rules is defined by the system preference 'item-level_itypes'.
There is more description in the manual:
https://koha-community.org/manual/17.05/html/02_administration.html#basic-parameters
I hope this responds to your question.
