Authority records for names and subjects are used to impose a controlled 
form of a term.  In doing so, they avoid having two different forms that 
describe the same thing, both of which may not be found by a search 
term  (e.g. Shakespeare, William vs. Bill Shakespear.)

There is nothing unique to Koha in this, it applies to all library systems.
