I haven't tried running MarcEdit in Wine. I've been amazed at what Wine will run.

A couple of years ago we tried to use Office97 (we've never had a more recent version) to do just that -- but ended up using OpenOffice|LibreOffice to open and save the Excel files as tab-delimited .csv files. Excel appeared to have difficulties with UTF8 and special characters. Disclaimer: Terry Reece has done an apparently marvelous job developing MarcEdit; we've never been able to run recent versions as our old Windows laptop is more of a museum exhibit than a useful tool. I would strongly suggest joining the list at <http://metis3.gmu.edu/cgi-bin/wa?A0=MARCEDIT-L>. As an aside, has anyone managed to get MarcEdit to function on a Linux box? We have failed miserably.
