Hi Andrew,
In my Debian installation I had to comment a line (inside the
"/etc/mysql/my.conf" file)

From:
bind-address = 127.0.0.1

To:
#bind-address = 127.0.0.1

Moreover, using a command like "netstat -putna" you can see in what
port/ip are listening all services in your system.
