I don't know how closely this applies to your situation, but my current
testing indicates that libyaz4 in Debian Squeeze will _not_ work with
Zebra at the moment. Instead, it segfaults. 

I'm not sure if this will apply to the CPAN modules or not.

I'm going to do some more testing and file appropriate bugs etc., but
for those using the packages, I suggest pinning (lib)idzebra-2.0* at
2.0.43-1 and keeping libyaz3 around for now.
