[Koha] Koha authentication against existing LDAP directory

I haven't been following this or the other recent LDAP threads very
closely, but the volume of LDAP-related messages has made me wonder
what I'm missing.

Can someone provide a newbie summary of what functionality LDAP + Koha
is supposed to provide? I gather it has something to do with
authentication, but who's being authenticated for what?
