It takes adding just a bit of HTML to your front page, along the lines of

<form name="searchform" method="get"
action="http://YOUR_OPAC_HOST/cgi-bin/koha/opac-search.pl">
  <input type="text" name="q" />
  <input type="submit" value="Search Catalog" />
</form>
