[Koha] Auto-Barcode?

Hi all -

I know this should be really easy, so I'm sorry if I'm submitting a total
noob question, but here goes. I'm trying to change the barcode field so that
we can just manually type in our barcode numbers, instead of having one
automatically supplied. However, I changed the auto barcode parameter to 0,
then to -1, then just tried deleting the parameter, and it seems to have
noeffect - when I go to make  a biblio record, it still sticks a serialized
barcode number in (1, right now, but if I save the record, next time its 2,
etc), and it won't even let me type over it. How do I set barcode rules to
say, more or less, that I'll manage them manually?
