OK, so what I think you are saying is that If I do the upgrade in two steps

1.2.3 -> 2.0.n
2.0.n -> 2.2.7

Then I should be fine (or at least on the right track).

That was really all that I think I needed. I'll give it a shot and let 
people know if I need more help.
