Wow. My throw-away comment on time zone may have been the reason. Can 
you try telling us the output of the following commands:

env | grep TZ # find out what TZ is set to
date # see what date reports as time zone
ls -l /etc/localtime # see what libc thinks is time zone

Please tell us the contents of the file /etc/TIMEZONE or /etc/timezone 
too.
