[Koha] MARC Communications Format Records

Larry,

The MARC standard does not limit the 001 field to digits. If Koha is doing
so it should be changed. The letters should be acceptable.  I looked at the
records using Showmarc )download for free at
http://www.tea.state.tx.us/technology/TLC/catalog.html ) and they look fine.
The MARC Perl module could help if you need to change the control numbners
for other reasons. However, I don't think changeing to suit the software is
the way yo go.

Pasted below and also in an attachment to this message are 3
bibliographic records in MARC communications format.  We have about
100,000 more just like these 3 that we would like to load into Koha.  If
you look closely, you will also see a "database control number" in the
form of 3 letters followed by a dash and 4 digits right after the stream
of numbers at the beginning of each record.  It looks like we will have
to convert this alphanumeric value into an integer in order to use it as
the biblionumber in Koha.  Can anyone suggest how we might load these
records and convert the database control number?
