I found the label "KohaDir" non-obvious. It refers to the z39.50 script
directory, not the root directory of Koha. Z3950Dir would seem to be a
better name.

Talking over the issue of the Z39.50 daemon could we modify the
safe_mysqld script to work?

It's already reasonably cross platform, well tested, and seems to be
designed to solve the same type of problems that I've been reading about
with the Z39.50 daemon.
