One good way of learning how to catalogue is by checking out individual MARC records, particularly if you know their origin to be trusted, like LOC records. This record is from my hometown catalogue for an encyclopaedia. The MARC tutorial that Marty suggested is another good idea. Just be aware that some fields are local in nature, so you don't need to repeat them in your record. For example, the 49$a field here just shows who holds the set.
