It seems that the hostname is part of the problem:

/var/log/rabbitmq/rabbitmq-server.error.log has multiple:

BOOT FAILED

ERROR: epmd error for host 34806: timeout (timed out)

Crash dump is being written to: erl_crash.dump...done

my /etc/hosts:

127.0.0.1       localhost
