It worked!

I added the $hCALL NUMBER to my 942 tag in MarcEdit and when it updated, biblioitems.cn_sort was populated.

You could try exporting the marc records from Koha and then moving the 050 data to the 942 callnumber field (h and m?) using your favorite marc editor.  Then reimport the records matching and overlaying on the biblionumber 999c.  The cn_sort in items is autogenerated by the value in itemcallnumber.  I would expect the same behavior in biblioitems.  But, again, it is not something I have direct knowledge of.
Or, yes, you can create item records that contain the classification source and callnumber.  Koha will generate the cn_sort for you.

I generally don't ever populate the biblioitems callnumber fields.  I'm wondering also if those fields are holdovers from a previous version of Koha.  The itemcallnumber, classification and cn_sort values I work with are all in the items table.
If the biblioitems.cn_sort value is to be populated it would also need to know the schema in the 942$2 ddc/loc/etc.

Anyone else populating these fields in biblioitems??

We just imported our collection into our new Koha installation.  It went really smoothly.

Based on the schema, though, I was expecting to find a sortable call number in biblioitems.cn_sort.  Since we don't circulate any materials, I didn't create any items.  Is there something I needed to set or map to populate this field when I redo the import?  Or, should I just add item information?
