[Koha] System configuration warning: analyticals in 3.10

Here's the warning:
"System preference 'EasyAnalyticalRecords' set, but UseControlNumber
preference is set to 'Use'. Set it to 'Don't use' or else the 'Show
analytics' links in the staff client and the OPAC will be broken."

Our catalogue has many analyticals that were created in our pre-Koha
database. Because many of the parent item titles are similar, we use the
control number of the parent item to link the children to the correct
parent.
I turned on Easy Analytical Records, in order to make the creation of new
analytical records easier. We haven't actually used the feature yet. But
if it'sgoing to break the control number link we're already using, I may
have to switch it off.

Does anyone have any experience with this?
Am I misunderstanding the warning?
Changing the setting does not seem to make a difference to the imported
records. Will it only make a difference to newly created records using the
Easy Analytical function?
