05 DAY WORKSHOP ON “INTEGRATED LIBRARY SYSTEM: KOHA & DSpace”. For Pakistani
University Librarian By HEC Government of Paksitan

Higher Education Commission's (HEC) Government of Pakistan Research &
Development Division deliberations and planning, a training workshop
spanning on five days was organized in collaboration with the Learning
Innovation Division of HEC at LI computer lab Islamabad. The workshop was
kicked off on September, 16, 2013 and was ended on September, 20, 2013 with
vote of thanks to all the participants. There were 17 sessions in totality
and each session lasted for 90 minutes. The topic of the workshop was
“Integrated Library System: KOHA & DSpace”. Library professionals from
public and private sector universities of Islamabad, Rawalpindi and AJK were
invited to participate in the workshop. Letters were written to the chief
librarians of universities to nominate two library professionals from their
respective universities. All the universities in Islamabad, Rawalpindi and
AJK were liaised but 18 universities responded. 27 library professionals
attended the workshop.
Mr. Muhammad Javed Iqbal Director Library (HEC) was the coordinator of the
workshop.

 *Mr. Sher Afzal chief librarian B.U. Islamabad was the chief resource
person. He delivered 14 lectures on “KOHA & DSpace”*. 

Mr. Muhammad Arif Assistant Professor AIOU, Islamabad delivered a lecture on
“Research Report Writing”. Mr. Maqsood Ahmed Shaheen Reference Specialist,
US Embassy, Islamabad, lectured on the topic: Role of social media in
Libraries & E-Libraries in USA.
Objective of the workshop was to equip the librarians with the practical
skills to use KOHA & DSpace in the management system of libraries. This
training workshop was first time offered by HEC for the library
professionals working in public & private sector universities. KOHA & DSpace
is an open source: a multiple lingual library management software that is
effectively being used in most of the countries around the globe by
providing free access to users. This workshop will serve as a yardstick for
building the foundation of innovative library management system in the
libraries of Pakistan.
An inaugural and closing ceremony were also held in the workshop. The
opening ceremony was started with the recitation of Holy Quran. Then
training coordinator Mr. Muhammad Javed Iqbal Director Library briefed the
participants about the workshop and he also told the participants that how
that workshop can be lucrative for them. Ms. Noor Amina Malik DG (LI) was
the chief guest and she opined that this will turn out to be an excellent
workshop and it would provide an opportunity to learn new skills in the
field of Information technology. Ms. Caryn Anderson Information resource
officer, US embassy, Islamabad was the guest of honour who pontificated that
the world is witnessing a dramatic change and we have to adapt new
technologies to cope with the new challenges in our libraries.
In the closing ceremony, Mr. Farman Ullah Anjum DG (HRM) was the guest of
honour and he said that this is an effective workshop and will sharpen the
knack of the library professionals. Dr. Masoom Yasin Zai, VC Quaid-e-Azam
University, Islamabad, was the chief guest. He appreciated the efforts of
HEC to conduct this valuable workshop. He was of the view that it would play
its role in future by changing the working of library professionals as the
users will get accustomed to open source software in their respective
libraries. He also distributed the certificates among the participants at
the end of ceremony.
All the participants showed composed mind and expressed their excitement
during the whole workshop. They actively took part in the all sessions and
tried their best to learn the management software offered in the workshop.
This type of workshop can be extended to all other provinces to train the
library professionals in the near future. Such type of trainings can be very
helpful for developing a union catalogue of all Pakistani university
libraries.
