Mary-
This generally means you have a problem in your marc record somewhere.  Something is invalid, a bad indicator or invalid subfield.  I would check your marc first.  If you access to the database, you can check the marcxml in the biblioitems table.  Sometimes is has things that do not appear in the Koha staff client framework.

I get this message every time I add or edit an item:  Can't call method
"subfield" on an undefined value at /usr/share/koha/lib/C4/Biblio.pm line
3005.

The item is still entered/updated, so I'm not sure what it means.
