short answer is, if you're using NoZebra, there are stopwords, but you
have bigger problems, as that is deprecated, and really shouldn't be used.
 If you're using Zebra, there are no stopwords.

Now,
in the default install, defaultSortField/defaultSortOrder are set to
relevance/ascending, which doesn't make much sense...it puts the *lowest*
relevance first.
