942$c is the default itemtype for the entire biblio, and the only one if
item-level_itypes is OFF. If item-level_itypes is ON, then 942$c becomes the
default itemtype for the biblio, and you can assign different itemtypes to
each item.

It should normally be lowercase; where are you having a problem?

If you're doing something like this:

650 $a Sea stories $a Detectives

It has to be:

650 $a Sea stories
650 $a Detectives
