[Koha] icu diacrtics and search problems

Okay, here is a very good mystery for everyone.
Koha 3.01.00.002 on Ubuntu 8.
When we use the default.idx file with Koha and the word-phrase-utf.chr
file, Koha searches perfectly fine and life is good, except for
diacritics.
So, we modify the default.idx file and use the icu.xml file and
diacritics work correctly. Searching is a different matter. Keyword
searching fails unless the search term has kw= in front of the term.
Also, the search term followed by an asterisk also works. Title, author
and all the other search functions work.
I got the following from the opac error log:
[Thu Nov 06 11:06:02 2008] [error] [client xxxxxxx]
HTML::Template::Pro:in TMPL_IF at pos 2399:end tag:found e instead of >
at pos 2425
[Thu Nov 06 11:06:02 2008] [error] [client xxxxxxx]
HTML::Template::Pro:in TMPL_IF at pos 2860:end tag:found e instead of >
at pos 2886
I am ready to entertain any ideas or suggestions.
Thanks,
John
