[Koha] Customising Patron Records

We have installed Koha 2.2.9 on Windows XP and intend using it for a university library situation. We would like to change the configuration of the patron record so that the Alternate Contacts section is able to be used for student name, Academic department and id number. We would also like these fields to be searchable. Is this possible?
