Actually, the current version of Koha does use some of the data from 
these fields < 10, and could easily be made to use more.

In the next major version upgrade (2.4) much of the searching will
rely on fields < 10. For instance, the 008 date fields, language 
codes, format, content, audience distinctions ... 007's material 
types, 003's control number id, 005's date of last transaction, 
etc. This applies only to the USMARC flavour of course, UNIMARC
support for these fields is forthcoming.
