Hi, Edward,

About your message, 2 points

You might also want to try registering for free Z39.50 access via the
National Library of Canada's Amicus service. As many of the same books are
published simultaneously in Canada and the U.S., you will find many good
MARC21-compliant records in our national database, too. Plus, sometimes, it
can be a little easier to access, and there is the possibility of batching
records for download.

Find out more at URL <http://www.nlc-bnc.ca/7/2/g2-400-e.html> .
You will want to use the Amicus registered service; don't worry - it won't
cost you anything, is usually set up in under 24 hours and they'll never
bother you with anything more than a very occasional new
services/upgrade/planned downtime notice.

Regarding your question

IIRC it isn't a number of attempts but an amount of time setting you can
choose. I've used a parallel search tool provided by our provincial library
services branch and when it can't find things we often get a time-out type
message (the time limit on trying is preset for all external users).
Perhaps someone else on the list will know how to define this to help you
stop the daemon from continuing ad absurdum.
