Patron attribute types
Hi there, probably a dumb question ...(sigh) I am working through the system preferences and parameters for a lovely new Koha 3.0 test site. We are running 3.00.00.107. Is it important to enter / specify any attribute types in the "Patron Attribute Types" are under Patrons and Circlation"?. If I should enter any / some, what ones would people suggest and why? Thanks for any helpful suggestions! cheers Jo Ransom. Horowhenua Library Trust NZ
Joann, i use Koha for the community library at the township i live in. See https://www.pustake.org Here's some patron attribute types i added for our own use: a) i added a 'drop-down' list of neighborhoods for the particular residential complex the member lives in b) And a 'drop-down' list to designate members as one of {resident/tenant/employee}, since we have all of them in the township I eventually plan to pull reports that will tell me how many members are residents or tenants, from a particular area, etc. Maybe we can use those reports to decide to reach certain parts better, for example. Though i haven't tried pulling a report yet, i am pretty confident that can be done from within Koha by creating a custom report or by just running straight SQL on the database. Koha 3 runs fine without any patron attributes being added. Add them if you want to store additional information with your patron data. We can't think of everything!

Perhaps your patrons are school kids. You could store their home room, grade level, that sort of thing, as extra attributes. As well, if there are authorised values that you wish to link to patrons, you can do this very easily by defining a patron attribute that Koha will link to the a.v. In general, if you have patron categorisation and data gathering requirements beyond what is already stored in the borrowers table, patron attributes are there to fill this need. cheers rickw -- _________________________________ Rick Welykochy || Praxis Services Finster's Law: A closed mouth gathers no feet.
Ditto what everyone else said :) But I thought you might find this useful as well: http://sites.google.com/a/liblime.com/koha-manual/Home/Table-of-Contents/adm... --- Nicole C.
