Interested in Open Source ILS?
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: *New website offers a starting point for librarians interested in Open Source Integrated Library Systems* * * Knoxville, TN, September 5, 2012 A new website, Open Source ILS (http://opensourceils.com), is now available as a resource for librarians and anyone interested in open source software integrated library systems (OSS ILS). The website is the product of a multi-year IMLS grant-funded study of technical support options for proprietary and open source ILS. It offers best practices gleaned from interviews with open source ILS adopters on subjects such as evaluating, migrating to, and customizing and maintaining these systems. While conducting their study, researchers found that although there are a number of resources available about OSS ILS, finding them is not easy and requires visits to several different websites to compile information. Open Source ILS is an effort to create a portal that will contain useful information about different systems and the steps necessary to migrate to these systems. This website is the first to consolidate resources on systems such as Evergreen and Koha in a single place. Links to additional information are included for each subject. These sources include vendor websites, community documentation, and technical support resources. Other features of the website include an internal blog, forum, and screencast tutorials. For more information, please visit the website at http://opensourceils.com. The School of Information Sciences at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, is recognized nationally and internationally as an interdisciplinary program of excellence in the information sciences. It is located at 451 Communications Building, 1345 Circle Park Drive, Knoxville, TN, 37996. -- Vandana Singh, PhD Assistant Professor, School of Information Sciences, University of Tennessee Knoxville, 449 Communications Bldg. 1345 Circle Park Drive Knoxville, TN 37996-0341 Email: vandana@utk.edu Website: www.vandanasingh.com

Hi - could that site link to the Koha community support forums http://koha-community.org/support/forums/ and the Koha blogs aggregator http://owu.towers.org.uk/planets/koha/ as well as those linked to particular vendor versions, please? Also, the Koha vendors page contains errors (we are not "the noncommercial Koha community" - we are commercial, or at least mixed) and is also pretty offensive IMO, classing three vendors as "major" (surprisingly, that doesn't include Catalyst or BibLibre) and the rest of us as chopped meat - sorry, "others". Could you replace that with a link to or inclusion of http://koha-community.org/support/paid/ please? We really did put quite a bit of thought into the vendor listing (some of which can be found in meeting logs and emails). And could you correct the instruction "Remember, open source vendors are still for-profit vendors" because I think there are at least two social enterprises (sometimes called "for-service vendors") and one public sector vendor among us. Maybe it should say "can still be"? Finally, seeing as I'm asking for the moon on a stick, could you include the F on the front of FOSS and speak about freedom a bit, please? (I thought the US liked freedom...)

And I don't think that's true, is it? It's great to have a site from UTK joining those available, but we've seen sites from JISC and others which have passed away, as well as ones like http://opensource.califa.org/ which still seem to be around.
